Most guys, when they get invited to act as their friends best man in the wedding says ‘okay’ without a thought. That’s perfectly fine, after all it’s always nice to know that your friend is getting married. Then, reality kicks in. You remember that along that invitation comes the responsibility to write and deliver the best mans speeches. Unless you had some training in public speaking, you’ll find this part of your job a bit anxiety-provoking. This is worsened by the fact that you’ll have to speak in front of your friends, families and guests who might know you personally. The tips below in delivering best man speeches were made to help you conquer the nerves.

Be sincere and be natural. It’s not like you’re in an oration contest and you’re not here to electrify the audience with your speech. If you approach the podium with these attitudes, you’d most likely come across as artificial. So try to be as sincere and natural as possible. If done this way, ten to one, you’ll be assured of a good delivery.

Although many are intimidated by the prospect of addressing people they know, it helps to know for many that this is their comfort zone where honest mistakes are easily forgiven. So there really is no need to impress them with an extravagant speech. In addition, it is nicer to hear a best man who delivers his speech in a conversational tone than someone who is stiff and is ready for the state of the nation address.

To read from your notes or not to read from them. You always have the option to have your speech memorized, to keep some point cards handy, or to memorize your speech and use point cards at the same time. Chances are, when you rely entirely on your memory you’ll forget some parts of your speech. If you can pull off a memorized speech, well and good, but in any case you should always have some adlibs ready. It’s perfectly okay to memorize your speech but try not to depend heavily on your memory as it sometimes slip. To ensure a good delivery, keep small idiot cards handy to help you keep track of your succeeding lines. On a side note, it is not obligatory to have a script for your opening lines.

Get prepared. It’s never a good idea to have your speech prepared the night before the big day or worse, on the day of the wedding itself. Even if you can count on your skills to deliver an extemporaneous speech, it’s still better to have a speech prepared. This allows you to become more conversant on the moment you deliver your speech, making the process easier for you and your listeners.

Keep it short and amusing. Anything longer than 5 minutes, unless you have the knack for keeping your audience entertained, is boring. So keep it short but to the point and entertaining.

Pass up on alcohol. Don’t allow yourself near the punch bowl until after you’ve delivered your speech. Usually, although alcohol can calm the nerves, it ruins the speech, letting you to be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Keep in your mind these pointers as your write and deliver your best mans speeches. Trust us, these truly help.
