As the use of motivational speakers becomes ever more common in the commercial and academic sectors of the United Kingdom, traditionalists throughout the nation can be heard criticising and turning their noses up at what they scathingly announce to be some kind of ridiculous new fangled American trend. It is funny, actually, how anything at all that’s widely used in the US can be so quickly written off by certain groups of scornful Brits.

What is maybe funnier, in an ironic sort of way, is that the motivational speaker could not be any further from some sort of new fangled American sensation. Motivational speaking isn’t brand new whatsoever. Illustrations of the motivational speaker are present throughout history; as far back as speech itself goes.

Not just throughout history is the motivational speaker common. All through ages of literature, the very best frontrunners were always good speakers. Fictional motivational speakers have long encouraged new generations of speakers. Which speaker has not attempted to emulate the power, effect and drama wielded by Marc Antony in Shakespeare’s rhetoric-laced ‘Friends, Romans, Countrymen’ speech?

The work of a good motivational speaker cannot be underrated. A strong example is that of Winston Churchill’s ‘We shall fight them on the beaches’ speech. Morale has been boosted and conflicts have been won and lost by excellent motivational speakers.

It follows then, really, that their abilities within the business and educational sectors has been seen. When morale is low and sales have plummeted, it’s incredibly easy for corporations to get themselves stuck in a rut. Inspiring words uttered by supervisors all too often take an accusatory or warning tone, which hinders instead of helps the problem. No surprise then that the motivational speaker is in more demand than ever before.

Who then is the motivational speaker of the twenty-first century? In the public eye it’s still the politicians. In the world of sports it is the football managers. In the world of education and learning it is the lecturers. But as motivational speaking turns into big business the motivational speaker turns into a more vague, more fluid idea. Today’s motivational speaker is the big business man, the sports star, the adventurer, the celebrity and the success story, or any combination thereof. You might question their capacity or question their authority, but you cannot argue with the benefits of a great motivational speaker.gab
